FROM HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT TO HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA

Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its humble beginnings in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Connecticut - Alice Goodwin, Mary Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Their belief was to provide homeless boys a positive alternative from roaming the streets, so they organized the first Boys & Girls Club of America. Throughout the years that foundation & philosophy grew nationwide & made strong roots locally in 1939. This was the beginning of The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg.

OUR HISTORY

The Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg was founded as a part-time venture in 1939 at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Harrisburg, initially serving 75 boys. Today, we offer a drug-free, alcohol-free atmosphere with caring professionals. They provide not only a safe and positive place to be, but also offer programs geared to today’s challenges through specific structured and guidance-oriented activities to over 1,300 members.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg is to serve as a neighborhood based organization committed to serving youth of all backgrounds in developing self-esteem and character and to help them become responsible citizens by providing physical, recreational, social, educational and vocational programs.
